Whooping Cough Threat Leads to Call to Get Booster Shots

Sacramento Bee (CA) (06/09/10) Dahlberg, Carrie Peyton

Californians should talk to their doctors about getting a booster vaccine for whooping cough, according to Dr. John Talarico, who heads the immunization branch of the infectious disease center within the state Department of Public Health. The whooping cough booster became available in 2005, but most adults have not taken advantage of the shot. Whooping cough has broken out in the state this year, and Talarico believes the booster vaccine would help to stem the spread of the disease. As of the end of May, 584 cases of pertussis were reported in California so far this year and five infants have died from the disease.
